All Hallows

All Hallows, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

O Allison Gross, that lives in yon tower
the ugliest witch int he North Country...
She's turned me into an ugly worm
and gard me toddle around a tree...

But as it fell out last Hallow even
When the seely [fairy] court was riding by,
the Queen lighted down on a gowany bank
Not far from the tree where I wont to lie...
She's change me again to my own proper shape
And I no more toddle about the tree.

Call Me

Call Me, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Call me call me any anytime
Call me for a ride
Call me call me for some overtime
Call me in my life
Call me call me in a sweet design
Call me call me for your lover's lover's alibi
Call me on the line
Call me call me any anytime
Call me

The genius that was Blondie. Excellent.
Shot taken in the Market Square on this glum October morning. We'll miss them when they're gone.

Great Pear

Pear, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Today's post (if Blogger actually lets me upload it!) is a testament to Global Warming, or at least to how warm our autumn has been and for how long. This Japanese Pear (in a friend's yard) normally turns this gorgeous colour for a couple of days and then sheds all its leaves in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it manner bu this year it's been over a week and still going strong. Beautiful isn't it? I know, he could sweep his yard occasionally...

Such Sweet Sorrow

VX 220, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Today's post is a tad self-serving but is still about Cambridge :) I've advertised the house and car everywhere possible in the last couple of days - except my own blog; so I decided to remedy that. Not that I think that someone in Hawaii is going to want my car (well actually, let's face it - anyone with a pulse is going to want my car!) it is the easiest place to point any and everyone to. And anyway, I like seeing its picture up here...

So the ad for the car (pictures here) goes like this:

Vauxhall VX220 Turbo 2004, 9,500 miles, Metallic Black/black. ABS, Alarm, Immobilizer. Alloy wheels, Leather seats and trim, Driver's airbag, Front fog lights, Blaupunkt cd, footrests, sill plates, 1 owner, fsh, tax Dec 06. Stunning car - astonishingly quick. No mods and it hasn't been used for track days. Moving house and losing parking space so need to sell. Has been garaged from new. £17,500. ono Email: neorelix@gmail.com

And the ad for the house (pictures here) goes like this:

Modern 3 bedroom terraced house with garage to let. Available now. £1200 PCM. Unfurnished. Has newly fitted kitchen and bathroom, new floor and carpeting, completely redecorated. Great neighbourhood - short walk from the Grafton and the town centre. Accommodation comprises: Ground floor - entrance hall, lounge, kitchen, WC and garage. First floor-2 double bedrooms & 1 single bedroom, bathroom with WC & power-shower over bath. GCH. Sorry, no students. Single contract only, £1800 deposit. Refences and credit check. E-mail: neorelix@gmail.com

And the ad for my sister (pictures here) goes ..... just kidding :)

Justaboutanything

DSC01067, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Every town must have one - a shop that defies classification. This is the window of Cambridge Leather Bags. I bet if you asked anyone in town where this shop was they wouldn't have the faintest. But it's been in the same place - Sussex Street - for as long as I can remember. And I've never seen anyone go in or come out. How on earth does it survive? It sells leather stuff for sure but also travel clocks, pocket watches, shaving brushes and cut-throat razors... exactly - that's what I mean! Long may it stay.

I'm not sure who this is by but I like it. I've checked on the Cambridge Street Art group but can't find it there either so maybe someone else will know. Think it's great though; it was pointed out to me by friends and I dashed over to get a shot of it under Ferry Cutter Bridge. Nice huh?

Popes, Wine and Royalty

Tony, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Missed you guys. Had a great few days in France - staying near Arles we checked out a number of great towns of which I especially enjoyed Chateau Neuf de Pape (for obvious reasons) and Avignon (I'll be going back definitely) but also can recommend the beautiful walled town of Aigues-Mortes where we watched the bulls being run through town over morning coffee - now that is one thing Cambridge doesn't have...

But closer to home I'll welcome you into the presence of royalty - well, not quite. Stuck on a large roundabout known as Mitcham's Corner is this small memorial to man's best friend -in fact a prince's best friend to be exact. Not quite in the league of Byron's bear but notable just the same.

Away until the weekend folks. Have a great few days and I'll see you when I return. Take care.

X Factor?

Buskin', originally uploaded by Neorelix.

The town was very busy today and there were a variety of entertainment acts out trying to part tourists from their money. This chap near the market was one of the weirdest - he made such a peculiar racket that I think people were watching out of pure fascination! Or maybe I'm just tone-deaf and he's the next Robbie Williams. Who knows? I think his dogs had had enough though...

11 not 13

11, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

I took this a little bit back and forgot to post it. I like...well, everything about it really and I decided to put it up because today is Friday the 13th and I think this counters the sentiments usually associated with that date. Mind you having said that, the first movie rocked, and the second wasn't bad either; the next seven (!) just got funny though don't you think? I mean, did you see 'Jason Takes Manhattan'?? Hilarious. Back to today's image - the picture is of the door of a cottage in a nearby street which always seems full of tourists taking pictures - it's that quaint, really.

However - more importantly, Happy Birthday Gwyneth and good luck today. Sorry you have to put up with such ne'erdowells and layabouts for neighbours....

Together Not Three Score and Ten

Memorial, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

I was walking down Free School Lane when I noticed this on the wall of the Engineering Lab. It struck me as particularly poignant in that so much is conveyed despite so little being said. A straight photo for once. I'm debating googling them to find out what happened but maybe we should just pause, reflect and move on...

Gargle then Spit

Gargoyles, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

I spent years as a kid wondering why people called these Gargles and assuming it was because rain would be 'spat' from them. And then when I clicked to Gargoyle I just loved the noun. It's such a...physical word. It's up there amongst my favourites along with 'antepenultimate' and 'misericord'. Of course, my absolute favourite word is 'pert' but that's a direction we probably shouldn't travel in. So anyway, these seven ugly chaps adorn our Catholic Church - Our Lady and the English Martyrs - at Hyde Park Corner. Just looking at them wrongly seems to me to invite fire and brimstone into your future...

Yes Please

Sumo, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Ok, I won't bore you with any more of pictures from yesterday after this. There were so many gorgeous machines and the most-humungous selection of GTRs I've seen in one place. I'll put some others up here for those interested but as of tomorrow it's back to photo-sets of the city :)

Holy Smoke!

IMG_1439, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Fun day for the boys today - 2 small and 2 big ones went to the JapShow Finale at Santa Pod. It was excellent from watching the Run What You Brung streetracers hitting 140 mph quarter miles in 13 to the awesome Jetcar that hit hit 258 mph in 6.2 - it was enough to keep even the most NOS-fuelled, testosterone-o'ding speedfreaks happy. I took 250 pics - none any good but I'm still going to bore you with a couple of days worth! This one makes me laugh because within that smoke-storm there's a Skyline GTR and a GTO drifting round a cone and a (very brave) photographer. Honest. I love the smell of rubber in the morning...

Upalong

Upalong, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

I cycle past this most days and I always smile. It may be a little cute but I'm happy to shrug off my usual grumpy persona and enjoy the fact that someone not living in a Cornish holiday village felt brave enough to name their place Upalong. It should feature in a timeless children's story. Love it. Maybe I'll name my new apartment 'Upabove (the Co-op)'... Heh.

Regeneration

Regeneration, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

This was taken a little while ago up near Castle Mound. I like its simplicity. It amuses me the way developers now create holes in their hoardings to allow the prols a chance to see progress... in progress. In this way we are kept informed with the changes in our environs. We are invited to be interactive, involved; we are part of the process. Altruism never smelled more like greenbacks :)

Boss

Boss, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Came across this in my files and thought it was a nice shot of the beautiful portico ceiling in Queens' College entranceway. The detailing is impressive and the colours quite sumptuous. A true craftman's accomplishment.

What's a Laundress?

DSC00387, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

A laundry maid apparently. I'd never noticed this sign before but i guess that's all part of the DP Blog experience. Nothing special this shot, but interesting I thought. And now I know where I can go to find someone to wash my wrestling outfits etc...

Memories

82, originally uploaded by Neorelix.

Miserable. The official verdict on today. The rain has been unrelenting and even worse, we've spent the whole day unproductlively trying to sort out my you've-never-seen-anything-so-cool projector system. You'll have to all come round when it's up and running (next March I should think) and watch The Godfather but until then I'm back-winding to a sunny halcyon time in July, when the days were long and the drinks longer. This was taken in Mill Road Cemetery and for some reason I just like it. Go figure.
