It's Four You

There's something uniquely British about this but I can't quite put my finger on it...

Chill Baby...

...Chill. It's hot and sweaty today. Real hot. Steamy, dirty hot. Rivulets of passion thread their sinuous paths across the soft, lithe, tanned expanse of he.... NO, wait; wrong blog...!

Instead our thoughts turn to fat folk with white beards, Donner and Blitzen, gifts, and elves. And stockings. Yes, stockings - sheathing the delicate yet muscular, lissom, tapered lenths of her subli... good grief - time for a cold shower...

Legs...

No reason except for it's so purty. It's a house just down the road from mine. Bizarrely, I've never liked the number 11 for some reason. But then again, I tend not to like odd numbers at all. It's probably quite common - I mean, just like everyone else I can't listen to the car stereo with the volume set at 19 or 23 - it has to be an even number or the world crumbles...

Similarly weird, I can't let the automatic kettle turn itself off... automatically. I have to beat it and turn it off myself. Or the world implodes.

Huh.

Sail on...

...on by. Wicken Fen nature reserve. Paradisical. It's like time has stood still for decades and I'm still young and carefree. Ahh, halcyon days. Although I am, of course, still young...

My Mate...

... Paul Whalen is a fantastic artist over in Boston and on a recent trip I brought this back. I don't even like Britney much but I love this six foot rendition of her. Customs had an issue with her - obviously a flat 6' slice of lucite is the disguise of choice for terrorist bombers - but I finally got her home and had to show her off. It's a one-off that he can't reproduce. He took a picture and xeroxed it til it was huge then washed the lucite with acetone and laid the photocopies over it. The toner or whatever it is transferred and etched into the lucite and voila - transparent red Brit. I love it. And I shot this pic in Cambridge so it kind of qualifies for the blog. In fact, one day when I'm loaded (mind you - with friends like you I'm already wealthy...), I'll open a gallery in which the pieces I own of his will take centre stage. And you're all invited to the opening dahhlings...

p.s. - locals might like to know that there's a photo comp goin' on. Pictures of H2O in any and all of its wondrous forms. My preference, of course, is frozen and added to something slightly alcoholic... Details here.

More Maya

This from a couple years ago - a commissioned piece for a local church. Looks fantastic no? More Maya.

Abbeyness...

... is an afternoon spent at my favourite local country house - Anglesey Abbey. The gardens are stunning - peaceful and beautiful with a colonnade of Roman Emperor statues and the house has stacks of treasures including a room housing what must be the largest collection of paintings of Windsor in one place. But who am I kidding? I go for the tea rooms obviously.

Sigh...

...supposedly the sound of despair as students traipse out of exams and over this bridge. The Bridge of Sighs was supposedly Queen Victoria's favourite place in the city - but only because she hadn't been to the Live and Let Live (which btw is having a 5 yr anniversary do this Saturday) or The Free Press obviously. Inspired by the 231 years-older one in Venice (Really??) it's found between 3rd and New Courts of St John's College (1511). Wacky students occasionally suspend cars beneath it - what jolly japes...

Shades of Summer

Ah yes, Trinity Great Court - a really gorgeous space, full of wonderful and welcome visitors buttonholing you and asking 'You take picture pliz, yes?' and supposedly the scene of the Great Court Run in Chariots of Fire; the scene was actually filmed at Eton. Of course, if you hang around the Great Court at Trinity you stand a chance of bumping into me - an opportunity lacking at Eton...

Slice of Summer

This is a tiny corner of Peterhouse, Cambridge's oldest college (1284) and the setting for Tom Sharpe's Porterhouse Blue. I think the lamp is a little less than 724 years old though..

On Reflection...

...I've decided this is one of my favourite snaps from last year. It's dull but the day was so still that the water barely shimmered and it actually looks like sky. The reeds are in the university botanical gardens just down the road - the garden is an amazing place and when you visit Cambridge you must make time for a wander round - possibly just before you buy me a beer. I also accept lunch.

Sunday; So Smile.

For some reason I thought this was uber-cool last year when I shot it. And I still do. If that makes me lame, so be it. Don't tell anyone but I've even got it as my desktop background. And it still makes me smile; maybe because I'm thinking of you whenever I see it...

Summertime - Same as it Ever Was

This shot was taken yesterday. Well, actually a couple of years ago. Or ten years ago. In fact it doesn't matter - it's unchanging eternally. Somewhere in an attic there's a pic like this all overgrown with ivy and weeds and stuff, with rusty zimmer frames lying all over the place but here on the backs it will forever remain 1441.

Oh, and in about 2 minutes that guy will try and impress his gf with an extra macho thrust; the pole will stick, he'll hang onto it and perform a gentle yet inexorable helter-skleter down its length into the chilly, bike-strewn depths to the applause of passers by as the aforementioned lady floats on down the river. Always, every time.

Outrageous Plagiarism!

I took this shot a couple of years ago of a mill just down the road - I quite liked the setting, the tranquil environs lending succour to my wounded romantic soul. But lo! I'm happily surfing this morning and I come across the picture below! Imagine my horror - that someone would take my image, copy it badly and then bastardise it with some knackered old cart and a flea-ridden mutt! I'm gonna find this bloke and have words...

Ooh... Exciting...

I seem to have been included in some funky and snazzy new guide to Cambridge. Check out how the punts above adorn something called the iPhone when used to navigate around the fairest city in Cambs. Bizarrely, other snappers have their shots on it too - which is either a mistake or merely a sop to their tender feelings in this modern world of 'nanny allows no losers'; The notification I got definitely intimated that I was the Chosen One / Best / Winner. All Hail Me.

Talking of winners, checkout the realm of Ms Reed - purveyor of postcards from the previous eras. Fascinating and funny, the posts are entertaining and evocative of vintage times and places past (Right, that's it - I'm banned from asinine alliteration for a whole year) and the site is the new link of the week. Yay.

Slateryeah.

Halcyon Days

Mill Road Cemetery, another tranquil space in the midst of the madness :)

Cloistered Away..

... in the centre of town is Sidney Sussex College. Thousands of people walk by every day but very few people notice it, know its name or how pretty it is inside. Small but perfectly formed; a welcome oasis of peace amidst the madding crowd...

Time to Climb

A shot I quite like of the Lloyds clock tower in the town centre - the climbing of which was the aim behind the infamous historic debacle - The Escape from Marks and Spencer - all part of the exploits of those crazy Night Climbers of Cambridge.

Fancy a Trip?

I can't imagine that you'd ever get bored of crazy Cambridge ;-p but if you need a change of pace pop down the road to Southwold - the home of Adnams Bitter. It's quiet, beyond beautiful and in danger of being stolen by the sea - catch it while you can. And of course, whilst there you have to go for fish and chips at Mrs T's - the best in all the land. Honest. It's in the harbour, which surprisingly is not in Southwold, but once you've found it don't tell anyone else. Keep the secret just for us...

Art Survives

This shot is just a gimmick but I like it so decided to post it today. Of course, it's not actually of Cambridge but still...

KISS

Keeping it Simple (Stupid) goes a long way sometimes and I've always quite liked the geometric clarity of all the edges and lines here. The pic was taken in the coffee shop at the Fitzwilliam Museum - it's well worth visiting; you could even go into the museum too...

Misty Memory

So the weather's appalling here today but at least it's warm. Unlike the day this was taken last winter - I remember it was miserable; not as romantic as this image suggests... Anyway, sadly I'm off to the eye of the storm today - I'd best remember my galoshes.

Maya's Madonna

Another of my favourites. Stencil rendition of Caravaggio's Madonna and Child by local Cambridge Street Artist Maya. Click through the photostream - you'll love it.

Tickets

I've always loved this shot for some reason. It's of one of my favourite places - the Arts Picturehouse here in town. A great independent cinema that needs our support - take yourself to see something good today :)

The Clinch

I thought I'd start posting some of my favourite images from the early days of CDP - I'm tempted to start shooting again but I just don't have the time at the moment so this will have to do. It's a step in the right direction though...
